Austin Sheraton (formerly the Austin Marriott at the Capitol)

Each year, when the Texas State Legislature is in session, the CRC of San Antonio, in cooperation with other CRCs and Federations throughout Texas, convenes a two-day conference in Austin to meet with state legislators to discuss issues important to our community's agenda.

Included in this conference are meetings with the Governor, Lt. Governor, Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, senior statewide officials, panel discussions on issues such as health and welfare, education, children's issues, homeland security, and a breakfast with all statewide elected leaders.

"The Texas Sunshine Law"

Do you want to know how your State Representative or Senator voted on an issue important to you and your community? Currently that information is not available as recorded votes are not taken on all substantive votes in the Texas Legislature. Texas remains one of only nine states that do not require its representatives and senators to record at least some of their votes. As a result, legislators can hide their moves.

An initiative known as the “Sunshine Law” calls to amend the Texas Constitution and require Texas Legislators to record all votes. Across the state over 150 organizations and individuals, including State Representatives and Senators, have signed on to the “Sunshine Law” initiative. Many Jewish organizations and religious institutions across have signed on to this cause. The Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio has voted to support this issue.
